Lutz Brinkmann: Painting samples

I have produced somewhere in the range of 2000 paintings since the late 90s and been able to decorate my various places and thereby show off le artiste. The thought of my artwork being looked at every day by others is quite appealing; it’s nice to feel people might be reminded of me on account of those objects in their vicinity. Once you, as the artist, start, you get better by practising – and by practising alone – you realise how much staying power there is in a well-painted portrait, for instance. We still look at Dürer’s or Whistler’s mother because Albrecht Dürer and James Whistler depicted them so well. Or think of Hans Holbein giving us a photorealistic representation of King Henry VIII from half a millennium ago. Real photos of these people we would not cherish in nearly the same way. However remote, there’s always the chance that you can make others and yourself last – fossilised on canvas.
